it's extremely tragic to have a family get out for a hot day. tragedy on the water in the south bay. the life of a father cut short after drowning while saving his son. the 10:00 news on ktvu fox 2 news starts now. >> good evening i'm ken wayne. >> and i'm cristina rendon. this evening sheriff deputies recovered the body of a father who saved his young son from drowning only to get pulled underneath himself. >> it happened at a series of ponds. ktvu azenith smith is live with the latest. azenith, authorities are saying the rough current caught a lot of people by surprise? >> reporter: yes, it did, ken. it was very hot today nearing triple digits. this family decided to cool down, go swimming behind this rv park here not realizing the danger that lied ahead.
10:01 pm
distraught family members holding on to hopes for hours devastated by the outcome after sheriff deputies recovered the body of their loved one. >> i mean it's extremely tragic. you have this father who gave up his life for his own son. you know, there -- as bold as it was, it was a tragedy for the family. >> reporter: the sheriff's office said around 2:00 a family of four adults and eight children were heading out to the pond behind the parkway lake's rv park. >> i saw a variety of the adults and some kids and they were bringing their blankets. it looked like they were going to go swimming. they looked like they were going out to have a good time. >> reporter: a good time until one of the children went too far into the water. the father went after his child said to be four or five years old. he got him to safety, but then went under himself. >> it's real sad, yeah. it is real sad. you know, i am more sad than anybody. but i would never think it
10:02 pm
would be that dangerous out there. >> reporter: divers from the sheriff's office using underwater sonar equipment searched for the man just after 6:30 this evening they found his body 15 feet under water 40 yards offshore. they first recovered his clothes. >> as he was going under water he was probably trying to shed some clothing, you know, just to reduce some of the hold of the water. >> reporter: these pictures show you where the family was swimming. it looked like the creek enters into a larger body of water where it drops off quick and it's deep. the sheriff's office said the man was found not wearing a life vest. it's not clear if anyone was wearing any proper safety equipment. there's no public access to this pond, no life guard, no park ranger. a sad reminder to take precautions out in the water even if it looks safe. >> you want to keep an eye on your children any time they are in any kind of water. it appeared to be quite calm, but it got deep unexpectingly.
10:03 pm
>> reporter: there is a gate for cars to go in there. we're told the family lives in a nearby ranch and likely walked in. the sheriff's office tells me that the man who died was in his 30s. they're not releasing his identity at this time. ken and cristina? >> azenith, just a sad story all the way around. it's hot, people want to cool off, but go to a legitimate place to go because those waters as you pointed out very deceptive. thank you, azenith. it was another hot day of sizzling temperatures across the bay area and northern california. the good news though a red flag warning expired for our area a little over an hour ago. while a cooling trend is expected this week the threat of wildfires remains. >> in fact a wildfire that started around 3:00 this afternoon has triggered evacuations. cal-fire says the baker creek subdivision of redwood valley became willetts was evacuated. so far it's burned at least 900 acres and only 10% contained.
10:04 pm
it slowed traffic on highway 101 between ukilla and willet. people in lake county are reporting visible problems there. some people are saying it's hard to see cobb mountain. the fire started from a vehicle fire that spread to nearby vegetation. in antioch a car fire sparked a grass fire off highway 4 near highway 60. it happened around 6:00 this evening. the fire forced the closure of the ramp 260. at one point the flames were burning close to homes. viewer trevor harris sent us this video. you see right there the gray plume of smoke, flames right off the side of the highway. by 7:30 the fire was out and the roads were reopened. let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo and a look at your triple-digit temperatures across the bay area. mark? >> yeah, extremely hot today and very dry out there as well with the humidity levels down to single digits. as you mentioned that red flag warning, the fire warning expires. this was in place for the north bay hills, the east bay hills,
10:05 pm
and the santa cruz mountains. we're starting to see the moisture levels trend up this evening. that's good news. but still even with the expirations temperatures will be hot. although we are heading in the right direction. today though we have lots of the triple digits out there topping 100 degrees. for brentwood and vacaville and sarah -- saratoga 103. even a few records to report as welcoming out for you as we show you those records and we do have a handful coming up for san rafael. in fact tieing a record. 97 degrees. oakland airport, mountainview, and san jose set a new record today. in fact at san jose going back to 1925. take a look at all the hot temperatures here in the bay area. that one temperature that really stands out. santa rosa 108 degrees this afternoon. that's major heat there. antioch 105. but at least the coast not nearly as warm in the bay and not nearly as warm as well. duo have a cooling trend to talk about though in your five- day forecast. we'll have more on that in just a few minutes.
10:06 pm
we want to mention that red flag warning expired a short time ago. but they are still concerned there had been five red flag warnings in the east bay hills since the start of fire season. ktvu leigh martinez explains extra patrols were out checking for potential hazards that could spark fires in the hills. >> reporter: access is everything when it comes to spenting fires. fire -- when it comes to preventing fires and saving livesment oakland firefighters took out the gator to first rescue an injured rider on the hill. but it's also useful in scouting potential fire dangers. >> what we're driving on is one of our firewoods known as a fire trailer. it's a carved out trail that we can take a vehicle like this and what we are showing you. but this is very much how we would get into a fire in a remote area like this.
10:07 pm
>> especially on a day like today with the red flag warning in the east bay hills, it's important firefighters know where all the access trails are. >> there is a whole other world back here that has to deal with the regional parks. >> reporter: the red flag warnings forced contra costa fire departments to cancel weekend trains. instead they want to put more firefighters out on neighborhood patrols. they noticed the wet winter weather gave grass a late growth spurt. >> they will cut it down to a height of four to six inches. >> reporter: cal trans cut this fire -- cal trains cut this fire earlier -- caltrans cut this fire earlier today. >> this is expected for early august. >> it's dry and it can fuel a fire to light up a whole hillside. so the top two things you shouldn't do during a red flag warning? >> flicking your cigarettes is a big one. i would say that's our number one. right behind that people are operating, mowing equipment or
10:08 pm
machinery equipment or dry brush. this isn't a good day to mow your hillside. >> reporter: hills that have never burned before are the most dangerous to spread fires. back in 2015 a budget measure failed that would have provided funds to get those grass-eating fire ghosts out here to cut down some of the grasses. firefighters say they did a pretty good job at keeping the tall grasses down throughout the entire fire season. in the east bay hills leigh martinez ktvu fox 2 news. new at 10:00 south san francisco police arrested two women who were charged of assaulting a bicyclist and stealing the bike. police say they attempted to ram a 17-year-old off his bike twice last night on spruce street. when that didn't work police say they confronted the teen and threatened him. police say the suspects fled with the bicycle, but officers found and arrested them not far from the crime. they're identified as serena green, both are 20 years old.
